Fireblaze laid down beside the tom and ran her tail comfortingly down his flank, whispering gently. "I'm here, Twoface. Hang in there for me, please. I need you." She nuzzled his injured leg uncertainly, looking for a response.

His body twitched as she nuzzled his bad leg, he was still asleep, but clearly felt the contact of her touching him.

She continued to murmur to him for awhile, then laid her head next to his to sleep alongside him, forgetting that Darkeyes' scent was still all over her. She fell into an uneasy sleep.

Every once and a while Twoface would cough in his sleep, but seemed to be doing better.

The two cats slept together through the rest of the day and the entire night. At sunlight suddenly streamed into the den, Fireblaze awakened with a gasp and turned to Twoface, nosing him all over.

"Twoface? Twoface, can you hear me? Talk to me, please."

Twoface was beginning to wake, though very groggy and he barely moved, his ear flicked and his eyes opened half way.

She shuffled close to his head and groomed him in between his ears, murmuring as she did the night before. "Twoface...can you talk? Do you remember anything?"

He opened his jaws slowly, his chest heaved as if he was talking, but nothing came out, his ear pinned back and he coughed, struggling to even try to talk.

"Shhhh, don't strain yourself. Take your time. I'm here." She groomed his good ear now, careful to avoid the spot where his ear had been ripped off. "Only talk if you can, dear."

As Twoface woke into consciousness and adjusted, she groomed him and used her paw to stroke his back soothingly. "Oh Twoface..." she whispered.

He slowly moved his head and laid it over her paw, his tail flicking slightly and he seemed to be trying to look around, barely able to see currently.

"You're in the medicine-den. You're safe now. Just rest, my love." She kissed his head. Suddenly, she smelled the scent of Darkeye and realized his sex scent was still over her. Instantly, she moved to groom her hindquarters to wash the scent away.

Twoface gave a small frown, smelling her and remembering what he had ran in on, his ear drooped and he gave out a long breath again.

She quickly finished and moved her head back close to his, hoping he hadn't noticed. She saw him draw a deep breath, as though trying to speak. She nuzzled his cheek. "It's okay, love. Take your time, I'll wait as long as it takes."

His eyes drooped, ".....Not..... Good...... Enough...." Was all he could manage, his voice was raspy and weak.

Twoface didn't answer, he had fallen back to sleep, his breathing was ragged as he slept.

Fireblaze got out of the next without disturbing her mate, stepping over him into the outside for a walk. Silently, she padded just outside of camp and chose a secluded clearing to gaze up at the stars where she fell asleep.

Twoface woke in the morning and he was able to roll onto his stomach, his head off the ground.

Fireblaze awoke at the same time, and stood up and stretched. Feeling slightly better, she padded back into camp and towards the medicine-den to check on Twoface.

Twoface was more awake than the day before, he moved around more too.

She purred when she saw him awake and on his belly, moving and looking around. She swallowed hard when she saw his scarred face, with a missing eye and ear. She trotted up to him and nuzzled his shoulder uncertainly, unsure what he would say.
